About the Artist

BackgroundArtist Donna McGee

Dublin born artist Donna McGee  has a background in financial services.  She has  always had a passion to paint.  Juggling to create the right balance with  family commitments and a busy work life, she opted  to pursue her love of art.  Consequently, she set up a studio at her home and immersed herself fully in the world of art.

Largely self-taught she  developed a unique style, encompassing a diverse range of influences.  She loves to travel, not least to  the beautiful west coast of Ireland.  She strives to capture the restless elemental forces of the Irish landscape and to celebrate its timeless beauty in her work.

She is drawn to the allure of stormy skies or vibrant sunsets contrasting with the dynamic force of the ocean. The ever changing light draws an emotional response and a spiritual connection with nature for her.

Weather permitting, Donna paints outdoors (en plein air) and she is a regular visitor to Europe’s largest open air painting festival in Wexford  Art in the Open.

Donna’s paintings have an ethereal feel particularly when she gets absorbed in abstract work.  She will incorporate  surrealist elements to create an atmospheric  effect so that the subject matter is transformed rather than merely recorded.

Her preferred medium is oils. She combines the use of palette knives which allow for the creation of rich textures in impasto style, resulting in a dynamic and raw energy.
