Skellig Michael towers 714ft. (218 metres) above sea level.
It is a World Heritage Site  and a designated Nature Reserve.

Skellig Michael  received close attention recently, as  the filming of Star Wars  proved  to be  controversial.  The Skelligs are a national monument and have an international reputation for its archaeology.   The Irish Times reported that fears of disturbing the wildlife  were also causing great concern.

On the summit of this awe-inspiring rock,   there is a remarkably well-preserved sixth century monastic settlement. On the spectacular Small Skelligs, Gannet nests appear on every available ledge making it the second largest gannet colony in the world.

Other birds of the islands include:

  • The Puffin
  • The Arctic Tern
  • The Black Guillemot
  • Herring Gull
  • The Razorbill
  • The Fulmar
  • The Manx Shearwater
  • The Cormorant
  • The Guillemot

Regular boat trips take about 45 minutes depart  from Portmagee marina.  Weather permitting, you are allowed a two-hour stay on the rock and then return to shore.
