BURREN - HEART ❤ SOUL @ Burren, Clare, Ireland

I have been watching The Burren, Heart of Stone, on Irish television, RTE. The self-taught filmmaker Katrina Costello brings us on a magical journey, narrated by the soothing tones of Brendan Gleeson.

Episode One was a walk through the seasons on this rocky limestone terrain, a fascinating and truly unique landscape in Co. Clare, Ireland. The cinematography was second to none. The Burren is part of the Burren National Park, UNESCO site, adjacent territory including the Cliffs of Moher. It is formed of carboniferous shale, sandstones and limestone dating back 300 million years. The first episode of this two-part series, introduced us to the flora and fauna, the fascinating turloughs - the lake recedes and disappears - along with so many other truly interesting facts.

Sometimes, I can feel, touch and taste the landscape. I have visited the Burren many times, but today, I felt compelled to paint. I took to the canvas, I wanted to capture the joy in my mind, the stories told of this enchanting land filled my senses to the full. I felt the need to offload all of that on canvas and to include the curious shaped Mullaghmore mountain with all its swirls rising from the seabed for all those years.

Hopefully I have captured some of that magic in this painting on my easel.

Busy working in studio today with a number of works in progress. It feels great when you get in a flow and it all seems to work well.

on 320gsm Indian handmade cotton rag watercolour.

Had the privilege and good fun sitting in an online workshop with @fujikorose the 2019 winner of landscape artist of the year and @kathleen.soriano, art curator and Artist of the Year Judge.

So lovely to take out the watercolours again and enjoy the quick results of a finished painting in one sitting. I am so used to working in oils and the lengthy time it takes for the oil to dry while working up the layers.
