Galway Hookers at Roundstone

Galway Hookers at Roundstone – Look at the mighty red sails of these fishing boats as they take off from the harbour of the beautiful fishing village of Roundstone,  west coast of Ireland.  This painting was inspired by many trips to Connemara along the Wild Atlantic Way and being joyful at seeing these boats.

The Galway hooker (Irish: húicéir) is a traditional fishing boat used in Galway Bay off the west coast of Ireland. The hooker was developed for the strong seas there.

The fishermen wished to weatherproof the sails and this process is known as ‘barking the sails’.  It is the reason why Galway Hookers have their distinctive dark red or rusty brown sails.
