Look at these gorgeous red sails as they take off from the harbour in Roundstone, Connemara. The Galway hooker(Irish: húicéir) is a traditional fishing boat used in Galway Bay off the west coast of Ireland. The hooker was developed for the strong seas there.
The fishermen wished to weatherproof the sails and this process is known as ‘barking the sails’ and it is the reason why Galway Hookers have their distinctive dark red or rusty brown sails.
