Poolbeg Chimneys Dublin or often referred to as The Pigeon House or the Chimneys or Poolbeg Generating Station which is a very familiar sight to all Dubliners.  It is said that it plays its part where the people, places and things that make Dublin special.

How tall are the chimneys in Dublin?

The thermal station chimneys completed in 1971 are among the tallest structures in Ireland and are visible from most of Dublin city. Number 1 chimney is 207.48m (680 ft 9in) high.

When flying in to Dublin, the sight of the Pigeon House tells you that you’re home! Located at Poolbeg Peninsula, Ringsend, on the south bank of Dublin Port, the chimneys are among the tallest structures in Ireland. It is situated adjacent to the now-decommissioned Pigeon House generating station, where electricity was first generated in 1903 (with the distinction of being the first in the world to generate three phase power).

Is the Poolbeg power station still in use?

The site continues to be an operational power station; though the power station does not use the chimneys for its 470MW gas turbine combined cycle plant which generates electricity for more than half a million homes in Dublin and beyond.

U2 used the chimneys as a backdrop, featuring it in their Pride (In the Name of Love) video. An early press shot of Elvis Costello also sees him posing on a misty Dublin day, with the twin towers behind him, and the chimneys continue to inspire.
